Andrea de Cesaris 1959-2014

Very sad to hear of the untimely passing of Andrea de Cesaris during this past weekend. A much under-rated driver who also had one of the longest ever careers in F1 with a good hand of podium finishes. He almost won a couple of times, bar mechanical issues. Many people forget he also raced in Sportscars with Lancia (see DSC link below).

This sad news is close to home. One of my very first commissions was presented to AdC by his Fan Club and Marlboro at the Belgium GP 22 years ago.

Adc

It was a real pleasure to create this montage for him. A very dedicated racer (you dont find many who will help the mechanics build their car when pushed for time) but also a very genuine and friendly guy who always said hello to this almost stranger.

RIP Andrea. Forza Andrea

Speedhunters and Andy Blackmore Design partner for SEMA Scion Tuner Challenge

via Speedhunters

The Scion Tuner Challenge is known for attracting the top builders and turning out some of the most radical automotive creations each year at the SEMA Show, so we’re honored to announce that we’ll be participating with a build of our own this year. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Tuner Challenge, Scion have mixed things up by choosing three of the top media outlets to compete against each other. Super Street will represent print, GT Channel as video, and of course Speedhunters as your digital media source of all things car culture.

True to form, we’re brainstorming behind the scenes to bring you guys the type of stylistic automotive mash-up you would only expect from Speedhunters, and we’ve teamed up our resident car builder, Keith Charvonia with designer Andy Blackmore to develop the build. Scion will be kicking in an FR-S and they’ve given us less than 90 days to transform the car from bone stock to show stopper. The FR-S has just arrived and we’re tearing into it now, so stay tuned for build updates.

Follow along right here on Speedhunters and ScionRacing.com, and let us know how you would build a Scion Tuner Challenge FR-S in the comments below. You never know, your ideas might even make it into the build!

The Speedhunters,

One of my previous projects with Speedhunters for SEMA was the Mustang RTR-X which I designed with Vaughn Gittin Jr., While the Scion Challenge has a significantly smaller budget, we plan to be different and create somethings striking….

What if? Ford Mustang GT350 GTE race car

I originally trained as a car designer and in later years designed, bodykits and styling modifications for various racecars and show-cars such as the Mustang RTR-X and the Need for Speed Edition Mustang GT500 SuperSnake.

I seem to have a connection with the Mustang as my latest little project, in association with Road and Track Magazine was a Ford Mustang GTE race car concept.

The new shape Mustang has lost some of the aggression of previous generations and has ended up a more generic machine, possibly due to its Global release, so this concept (and its just that) is more menacing and based loosely off the GT350 which is currently testing at the Nurburgring with Camouflage.

Nissan Le Mans and GT-R LM NISMO creative assets

At the end of May, Nissan Motorsport announced they will enter the 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship including Le Mans with a full-factory effort of two LM P1 cars. The car will be called the Nissan GT-R LM NISMO and will make its testing debut towards the end of the year. In addition to sponsorship of my Le Mans Spotter Guides, I was separately commissioned to create some supporting car illustrations showcasing Nissan’s current and future involvement.

#ESRR_infographic_v8

I produced a number of vehicle illustrations to support their media coverage for the announcement and for Le Mans.

#ESRR_infographic_v8

This is a great example of how illustrations can give a client a consistent message, free of different photo shoots and lighting challenges.  The images were utilized a number of times making them excellent value for Nissan.

Proton Competition Porsche 991 RSR

Earlier this year, I was commissioned to produce a livery for Proton Competition, one of the Porsche supported teams which competes in the WEC and Le Mans. Along with Falken Tire (who I also assisted with their 2014 991 livery), they are the only non-factory team to run a new generation Porsche 991.

In 2013, Proton changed their livery to Silver and Black design, based on Tully’s sponsorship in the US for Patrick Dempsey. For 2014 the team wanted a design which flowed along the car, not too complicated as very little time was left to design and wrap but retain the Silver and Black. As you can see, at this point, the car was to have significant branding from Eyecoon and Remus. The Remus face has been subtly adjusted so the eyes fit on the air outlet blades.

Falken Tire Comission

I have also designed a number of stickers in recent years for the company. The latest set, for Falken’s Formula Drift program is shown above.

Twenty Years Ago : Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna da Silva

This week marks the 20th Anniversary of the deaths of Roland Ratzenberger and Ayrton Senna at Imola, Italy. I remember very clearly watching Qualifying with my housemates while at Coventry University, going cold after Roland had crashed and they zoomed in on the wreckage, this coming just 24hours after a horrendous accident for Rubens Barrichello during practice. Roland was a very gifted and under-rated driver. Like his team mate David Brabham, he was sure to go onto better things and had been relatively successful in Japan in sportscars, having driven for Toyota and the SARD team. Continue Reading

2014 Fredric Aasbø Scion tC Formula Drift Livery

I have recently been working with Formula Drift driver Fredric Aasbø, his team, Papadakis Racing and Speedhunters on a new identity for his Scion tC.

news_fred_tc14_2

Speedhunter’s Rod Chong originally contacted me last year to work on some ideas for new liveries to replace the iconic Team Need for Speed identity which I designed in 2010. Despite ‘Team NFS’ ceasing to exist a couple of years ago, the asymmetric has continued with updated Speedhunters branding for Fredric (below).

Camp Boggy Creek Livery for Bayshore Racing

Round Two of the Tudor United SportsCar Championship, the 12 Hours of Sebring takes place this weekend and I am delighted to confirm an additional livery in the series for Camp Boggy Creek, Bayshore Recycling and PR1/Mathiasen Motorsport. This makes a total of nine cars racing at Sebring with my liveries!

news_BS_art_final

Sponsor Bayshore Recycling commissioned me earlier this month to design a livery for their new affiliation with Camp Boggy Creek – the Florida-based camp for seriously ill children. The tie-in with Camp Boggy Creek came through team partner Bayshore Recycling’s desire to highlight a worthy charity for the 2014 season. The decision to form the partnership with Camp Boggy Creek is thanks to the late, great Paul Newman.
