Au revoir ALMS (+ wallpaper download)

I was recently commissioned to produce a 15th Anniversary graphic showcasing all the American Le Mans Champions by Delta Wing Racing Cars. The graphic was in the style of my ‘Spotter Guide’ series and included Audi, HPD, Lola and Panoz Championship winning cars.

news_dw_car2

I was approached by legendary team boss, David Price, who I had created liveries for in the 1990’s for various McLaren F1 GTR and the first Panoz GTR-1. I had to draw some of the early chassis up from scratch including the Panoz LMP-1. Luckily Photographer, John Brooks came to the rescue with some great reference shots. DeltaWing Racing Cars Manager Partner Dr. Don Panoz founded the ALMS in 1998 and built it into one of the premier sports car racing series in the world. The series came to an end this past weekend and will merge with GRAND-AM to form the Tudor United SportsCar Championship in 2014.

SPOOF! – Muscle Milk go DeltaWing….or not

I worked up a spoof Muscle Milk Delta Wing livery for DailySportsCar.com while I was at PetitLe Mans (luckily having a plain white DW on my laptop). This followed continued rumours about Muscle Milk Pickett Racing for 2014, many of them very wild of the mark.

So, despite DSC clearly stating ‘For those of you that have a satire or sarcasm filter, this is NOT TRUE; it is meant to actually lighten what has been a rather intense and sometimes not enjoyable season‘, I’ve seen forum, FB and Twitter posts saying otherwise. Good old Internet.

BTW- This was cleared by MM Pickett Racing

Porsche 991 Cup and GT America Iivery templates complete

John Dagys of Sportscar365.com writes, “Porsche North America is expecting a high demand for its new Porsche 991 GT America race car which is likely to dominate the GTD class of the new Tudor United Sports Car Championship.”

The 991 GT America is based off the new 991 Cup car and I have full vector templates drawn up for both cars for any teams who would like to commission full livery designs or quick sponsorship mock-ups.

I have a large collection of vehicle templates and access to data and assets from many manufacturers to ensure current and future templates are the most accurate available, including other GT3 machinery likely to fill GTD including the McLaren MP4-12 GT3, BMW Z4 GT3, Ferrari F458 and Audi R8 LMS

Do not hesitate to contact me if you require further information.

TAG Heuer Eyewear and Tommy Milner

I was commissioned by TAG Heuer Eyewear to create a new helmet design for 2012 ALMS GT Champion, Tommy Milner earlier this year. This cool video, directed by DC Chavez, is a snapshot to the design and paint process by Tyler Cenarrusa of Censport Graphics.

The video has proved very popular with Jalopnik, Speedhunters and Motorsport.com all carrying it. It was a great project to work on and start my relationship with TAG Heuer Eyewear which continues in 2014.

You can see my full Portfolio Post on the Tommy Milner TAG Heuer Eyewear helmet here.

Unique Porsche 911 DV8 build

Nick Fousekis, Director, Motorsports Marketing and Events at Falken Tire in North America recently commissioned me to create some quick Photoshop renders to showcase his latest project. A Porsche 911 with a GM DV8 engine!  The build is supported by Andy Blackmore Design, Falken and HRE amongst others and will be based on a 996 chassis with various body and aero changes to make the car look like a road going 997 GT3 RSR!

Various elements on the car have been cleaned up including the side air intakes and various fixings while the build will be devoid of a ALMS style rear wing.

Photographers

My new site features ‘header’ images by some of the worlds top Motorsport Photographers. I would like to pass on my thanks for usage.

First off, the artist formally known by one name! Linhbergh is a fantastic photographer. Pretty much self taught, like me, he was one of the founding members of Speedhunters.com and always creates exceptional photography. Now in demand by OEM’s, this lead image is of the Ford Mustang RTR-X I designed with Vaughn Gittin Jr.  Shot on one of the infield (inside turn 3/4 I suspect) roads at Road Atlanta.

This cropped image by John Brooks is of the WRT Battlefield 4 Audi R8 LMS entering the Karoussel at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. John has decades of experience which shows time and time again in his amazing shots. What ‘Brooksie’ doesn’t know isn’t worth knowing. Make sure you check out his blog.

Happy Birthday McLaren

One of my first employers is 50 today! McLaren was started by the Kiwi, Bruce McLaren in 1963 and quickly became race winners in Formula One, Can-Am and later after his death at the Indianapolis 500. I was fortunate to work for McLaren in the 90’s and play a small part in Mika Hakkinen’s Championship as a member of the Race Team, stationed back in the factory.

I was also involved in various liveries and while I didn’t design it, I was consulted and helped with application of the ‘modern’ Papaya Orange livery of the West McLaren MP4-12 Test Car back in 1997. I thought it would be cool to see the 2013 car in a retro livery, either the popular orange, or the iconic Rocket Red and White Roof tops of Marlboro at the Italian Grand Prix.

Honda Integra for UAE Touring Car Championship

I have been very fortunate, thanks to Saudi Falcons and before that, Team Need for Speed to have received some great exposure of my work in the Middle East.

Recently Jonathan Mullans commissioned me to create a new livery for Zettanet Racing ‘s Honda Integra DC5, which will compete in the 2013-2014 UAE Touring Car Championship.

The team, based in Abu Dhabi had seen my Saudi Falcons work and required a livery a little different from the norm, but with a black base and green accents as per their two main sponsors EC Harris and ZettaNet.

Mustang RTR-X ends up as a Tattoo!

So I have been tattooed on someones forearm – sort of!

I co-designed the Mustang RTR-X with its owner and Formula Drift Champion, Vaughn Gittin Jr. a couple of years ago.

Its been pretty amazing how much exposure the car still gets. Anyway, just seen this image on Instagram. Fantastic Tattoo, created from the above image at Willow Springs by Drew Phillips. I’m in the passenger seat, you can just see the peak of my helmet LOL.

The challenges facing Scott Elkins

Scott Elkins is the highly respected COO of IMSA and has been busy drawing up new regulations for the new United Sports Car Championship, which is a merger of the American Le Mans Series and GRAND-AM.

The problem is, both parties want their premier class to lead the grid in the new series. The relatively crude GRAND-AM Daytona prototypes don’t have the aerodynamics of a Le Mans Prototype car, but have a higher top speed, given a long straight. The cars are really polar opposites. Road America saw both series on the same bill, although they didn’t run at the same time, you could compare their times for a rough estimate.

Bimmerworld F30 3 Series takes to the track

Thanks to a huge effort by the Bimmerworld crew, the all new BMW F30 generation 3 series took to the track this past weekend. This extra entry marks the start of a new era for Bimmerworld and as indicated in our earlier post an all-new identity!

The F30 has been built in-house by Bimmerworld Racing over the past year, while at the same time having to focus on their regular Continental Tires Sports Car Challenge. The 2012 ST Team Champion will use a number of the remaining races as a public test session in preparation for 2014.

Bimmerworld Teaser

Long term client Bimmerworld Racing have been working on a new BMW 328i F30 during the past few months and I have been working on an all-new livery for the team.

The 328i will be the first F30 N20 turbo to be professionally in the world. Livery was signed off this past week and earlier today, Bimmerworld teased the image above on Social Media. Today also saw the car run for the first time.

Car in final build, More soon!

Battlefield continues at Spa 24Hours

Following on from the one-off Battlefield 4 livery I designed for the Nurburgring 24Hrs design, I have produced a revised livery for the two-car Battlefield 4 team for two entries by Team Audi WRT for the 2013 Spa 24Hours.

Compared to the Nurburgring car, I needed to include additional sponsorship with Total along with Pirelli tires. Rather than just stick a rectangular Pirelli logo, I wanted to incorporate it into the design. Multiple DTM champion, Mattias Ekström, Marcel Fässler and regular ABD client, Edward Sandström joins the team for this event and brings additional sponsorship from Red Bull which also needed to be incorporated into the design of car #13news_wrt_spa_n1

My designs in Formula Drift

I took my now annual trip down, into the States for Formula Drift this past weekend. After a successful debut with Team Need for Speed in 2010, when I won the ‘Best Looking Car’ with Mad Mike Whiddett for the Team Need for Speed Mazda RX-8, I’ve always had a presence in the series.

Le Mans ‘Wallpaper’ launched

I have released two 2013 Le Mans Wallpaper Desktops for your computer, tablet or Smartphone. The first wallpaper celebrates the Nissan powered entries in the 2013 24 Heures du Mans which includes the E-ZEOD racecar which is the ‘Garage 56’ entry at Next Years Le Mans.

The second wallpaper showcases all the entries of the 2013 race in their finishing order. You can view all the wallpapers at www.spotterguides.com

Where it all began, 20 years ago….and then later made the front pages

One of my first liveries was based on a winning design I submitted in an Auto-Express Magazine Toyota BTCC competition in the UK.

Toyota GB were releasing their new Carina E to the public, which would also race in the golden era of Super-Touring in the British Touring Car Championship. As the car was one of the first Toyota’s to be built in the UK, my competition entry featured the Union Flag colors, asymmetrically across the car. I was fortunate to win the competition and my developed design was adjusted a little with curves prior to the 1993 BTCC season.

Rescuing a livery for X-Games Germany

New client this week! A quick ‘rescue mission’ from Multiple RoC and DTM Champion Mattias Ekstrom. Ekstrom was entered in the Red Bull VW Polo R for X Games Munich but the original Battlefield 4 branding on the all blue car was getting lost. Mattias contacted me after seeing my work with the WRT Audi R8 LMS Ultra to see if there was a quick fix.[

I always like a challenge. Time was tight, I had other commitments and due to the nature of Rallycross, any vinyl wrap has to be refitted every day, so it had to be simple. I received a request on the Tuesday to have a look at a quick fix which could be easily wrapped daily and came up with this Digital Camo which was approved by EA and Red Bull on Thursday, cut overnight and wrapped first thing on Friday!
