Fredric Aasbø and Papadakis Racing’s newest adventure, Dreamride: Los Angeles

Fredric Aasbø and Papadakis Racing have been clients for many years. I’ve had the oppotunity to design many of Fredric’s liveries way back to the Need For Speed Toyota Supra which he drifted in Europe, prior to the Scion tC campaign with Papadakis.

Fredric narrowly missed the 2014 Formula Drift title in North America but later took the 2014 Formula Drift Asia title in October.

This short film showcases the 2014 Formula Drift weapon, one of my favourite liveries. I was really pleased with how this came out and the contrast between the Florescent Red and White and the Satin Black and Dark Grey.  This is a very cool flm.

Speedhunters: From Concept To Reality-The Hoonicorn RTR Build Story

Formula Drift Maestro, Vaughn Gittin Jr has recently published a detailed build story of Ken Block’s ‘Hoonicorn’ Mustang RTR on Speedhunters.

I was originally contracted by Vaughn to design the look of this all-out extreme 65 Mustang back in 2012. At each stage, the art was reviewed by Vaughn, Ian Stewart of ASD (the car builder) and Ken.

The team required something a little more bad-ass, aggressive and more Mad-Max which ensured I left my comfort zone! The final design is very close to my original concepts.

You can read about the whole process over on Speedhunters.

I have also added images to my Portfolio section of the website.

A fun project to work on which shows the diversity from the Scion Tuner Challenge Scion FR-S and the Mustang RTR-X. Taking bookings for SEMA 2015! 😉

2014 Scion Tuner Challenge Winners!

It has been a crazy week at SEMA for me this year with various meetings and launches of various cars, but one of the main highlights was Speedhunters ‘Maximum Attack’ Scion FR-S winning the 2014 Scion Tuner Challenge earlier this week.

2014_SEMA_Tuner_Challenge_Winner_Speedhunters_001Andy Blackmore, Scion Corporate Manager Dave Harbuck and Speedhunters Technical Editor Keith Charvonia

Hot rod car builder, Keith Charvonia of Charvonia Design, created an amazingly detailed build to an exceptionally high standard, with our reference to the old 70’s and 80’s IMSA heritage and a reason for everything on the car we managed to take the win narrowly from SuperStreet, who had previously won the Fan Vote.

Thanks to everyone who took the trouble to vote for our build last week. It is much appreciated. Thank you to the many partners on the build along with Super Street Magazine and GT Channel who produced awesome builds.

You can read about the other builds and liveries at SEMA here. Thanks again for the vote and the support.

SEMA 2014 in review

The 2014 edition of the SEMA Show in Las Vegas was a very special one for me. The SEMA show is the largest aftermarket automtive show in the world and one of the largest shows of any kind in North America. This trade only event attracts hundred of thousands of trade visitors and thousands of cars.

hoon_stc_Scion

This year, I had ten designs at the show including thee builds and eight debuts. It was amazing to see all the vehicles made even better with my design for the Scion Tuner Challenge, the ‘Speedhunters Maximum Attack Scion FR-S’ winning the competition and the debut of the Ken Block 1965 Mustang ‘Hoonicorn RTR ‘which I styled.  I hope the variety of designs from the Hoonicorn through to the all new global livery for Maxxis shows the diversity of design which I can create.

More on each vehicle below.

I partnered with Keith Charvonia of Charvonia Design to create a special track day racer inspired by the early days of my client, IMSA, and the introduction of Japanese manufactures to American racing including the legendary TRD Celica by Dan Gurney’s All American Racers.  You can read more about the design process HERE.

Andrea de Cesaris 1959-2014

Very sad to hear of the untimely passing of Andrea de Cesaris during this past weekend. A much under-rated driver who also had one of the longest ever careers in F1 with a good hand of podium finishes. He almost won a couple of times, bar mechanical issues. Many people forget he also raced in Sportscars with Lancia (see DSC link below).

This sad news is close to home. One of my very first commissions was presented to AdC by his Fan Club and Marlboro at the Belgium GP 22 years ago.

Adc

It was a real pleasure to create this montage for him. A very dedicated racer (you dont find many who will help the mechanics build their car when pushed for time) but also a very genuine and friendly guy who always said hello to this almost stranger.

RIP Andrea. Forza Andrea

Scion Tuner Challenge Update

I was recently contracted by Electronic Arts and their Speedhunters car culture blog to design the look of their entry in the 2014 Scion Tuner Challenge at SEMA in November. The car builder is Keith Charvonia who built one of the stars of the show, a Kaiser, back in 2012 and has been featured on Jay Leno’s Garage web-video series. We have less than 90 days and a $10,000 pot of gold to transform the car.

Speedhunters and Andy Blackmore Design partner for SEMA Scion Tuner Challenge

via Speedhunters

The Scion Tuner Challenge is known for attracting the top builders and turning out some of the most radical automotive creations each year at the SEMA Show, so we’re honored to announce that we’ll be participating with a build of our own this year. To celebrate the 10th anniversary of the Tuner Challenge, Scion have mixed things up by choosing three of the top media outlets to compete against each other. Super Street will represent print, GT Channel as video, and of course Speedhunters as your digital media source of all things car culture.

True to form, we’re brainstorming behind the scenes to bring you guys the type of stylistic automotive mash-up you would only expect from Speedhunters, and we’ve teamed up our resident car builder, Keith Charvonia with designer Andy Blackmore to develop the build. Scion will be kicking in an FR-S and they’ve given us less than 90 days to transform the car from bone stock to show stopper. The FR-S has just arrived and we’re tearing into it now, so stay tuned for build updates.

Follow along right here on Speedhunters and ScionRacing.com, and let us know how you would build a Scion Tuner Challenge FR-S in the comments below. You never know, your ideas might even make it into the build!

The Speedhunters,

One of my previous projects with Speedhunters for SEMA was the Mustang RTR-X which I designed with Vaughn Gittin Jr., While the Scion Challenge has a significantly smaller budget, we plan to be different and create somethings striking….

What if? Ford Mustang GT350 GTE race car

I originally trained as a car designer and in later years designed, bodykits and styling modifications for various racecars and show-cars such as the Mustang RTR-X and the Need for Speed Edition Mustang GT500 SuperSnake.

I seem to have a connection with the Mustang as my latest little project, in association with Road and Track Magazine was a Ford Mustang GTE race car concept.

The new shape Mustang has lost some of the aggression of previous generations and has ended up a more generic machine, possibly due to its Global release, so this concept (and its just that) is more menacing and based loosely off the GT350 which is currently testing at the Nurburgring with Camouflage.

All the Jerseys have been accurately illustrated including the new Tinkoff-Saxo top which was released yesterday (July 4th) and can be downloaded on the new dedicated Tour de France Page on sister site, SpotterGuides.com

Nissan Le Mans and GT-R LM NISMO creative assets

At the end of May, Nissan Motorsport announced they will enter the 2015 FIA World Endurance Championship including Le Mans with a full-factory effort of two LM P1 cars. The car will be called the Nissan GT-R LM NISMO and will make its testing debut towards the end of the year. In addition to sponsorship of my Le Mans Spotter Guides, I was separately commissioned to create some supporting car illustrations showcasing Nissan’s current and future involvement.

#ESRR_infographic_v8

I produced a number of vehicle illustrations to support their media coverage for the announcement and for Le Mans.

#ESRR_infographic_v8

This is a great example of how illustrations can give a client a consistent message, free of different photo shoots and lighting challenges.  The images were utilized a number of times making them excellent value for Nissan.
