Project Trailhunter livery for SEMA

I have partnered with top car builder, Keith Charvonia again for this year’s SEMA Show with his Toyota LandCruiser FJ60 project ‘Trailhunter’.

We had previously worked together on the Scion Tuner Challenge winning Scion FR-S build a couple of years ago.

Keith is simply an awesome car builder who does much of the work himself. He has appeared on Jay Leno’s Garage with the Scion and his unique Kaiser Manhattan.

More on the build in a few weeks, but special thanks to my existing clients, AERO and Safecraft Safety Equipment who didn’t hesitate to come on board when I asked them.

Team AAI – Fist BMW M6 GT3 Livery

Leading Taiwanese team, Team AAI – Fist, partnered by legendary Asian performance part manufacturer, Buddy Club, recently showed off their new BMW M6 GT3 racecar during testing, ahead of its Asian Le Mans Series debut in October. Team AAI have a number of race programmes around the world which included running a Corvette C7.R at the 2016 24 Hours of Le Mans.

I was commissioned by Team AAI to create a design using the Buddy Club colors and basic graphic, but to make it a little more dynamic. At the same time, ‘Fist’ needed a larger presence, so while the car was in Buddy Club colors, they would share billing with FIST with additional flashes at the rear.

The Colors of IMSA

If everything aligns with delivery, this weekend will see the debut of a new IMSA t-shirt at Virginia International Raceway.

The Colors of IMSA showcase 16 liveries from the 2016 series from the iconic colors of Corvette, Turner Motorsport (hopefully 😉 ) and Stevenson to some of the striking new colors this year including the Gas Monkey Viper and the new Ford GT. Can you guess the rest?

On the rear, all the full time teams are listed.

The shirt should be on-sale at the IMSA Shop on site at Virginia International Raceway and will then be online in the next week or so.

If you are attending VIR this weekend, don’t forget to grab the official IMSA Spotter Guides at my sister site, SpotterGuides.com

New CJ Wilson Racing Render for Chicago Blackhawks

The forthcoming Road America round of the IMSA Continental Tires Sports Car Challenge will see a revised livery for the #35 CJ Wilson Racing Porsche Cayman GT4 Clubsport, supporting the Chicago Blackhawks Charities program.

While I wasn’t involved in the small tweak to the existing livery I was able to contribute on a Forza based render which was used for the press announcement earlier this week. Top Forza skin creator, ‘SCSSkreamies’  captured the image below from Forza, complete with the Road America bridge and I then photoshopped this Cayman into a full ‘GT4 Clubsport’ model with new splitter, air intakes, rear wing, additional branding, wheels and adjusted interior.

New livery for Vancouver Canucks mascot, FIN

A new livery made its debut on social media earlier this week and publicly in Vancouver during the Canada Day Parade. The ‘FINmobile’ is a modified Ford Transit which is used for the Vancouver Canucks mascot ‘FIN’ to travel around and get ready in.

This joins the Toyota Tundra which is featured in the folio.

Vancouver Canucks Livery Design

The Vancouver Canucks recently commissioned me to produce a livery for one of their new Toyota Tundra trucks. The NHL Hockey team wanted a striking and unique design to showcase their new relationship with Toyota and promote their ‘#PlayForThis’
campaign.

Clients, CJ Wilson Racing, Tyler McQuarrie and Safecraft join forces

It is a cool experience when my clients join forces.

GT and Formula Drift racer, Tyler McQuarrie has been a client for many years as has CJ Wilson Racing, the team he has driven for during the past three seasons. Last year, Tyler teamed up with CLP Motorsport, owners of Safecraft Safety Equipment and Nexgen diesel fuel.

I have designed liveries for all three.

Safecraft wll be title sponsor on the CJ Wilson Racing Porsche Cayman GT4 of Tyler and Till Bechtolsheimer at the IMSA Continental Tire SportsCar Challenge round at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca next weekend.

Khaled Al Mudaf makes debut in Stadium Super Trucks

Successful GT3 racer Khaled Al Mudhaf made the trip from Kuwait to Long Beach, California this past weekend to take part in his first ever Stadium Super Truck race, support for the Indycar and IMSA event at the same weekend.

I have known Khaled from a few years ago when was was one of the most welcoming people at the Dubai 24Hours.

KAF_1

Khaled reached out to me a few days before the event to confirm he was able to compete and could I design a livery, but they needed to wrap the truck almost immediately. His company, G-Force Auto Worx is a very successful high end tune and build shop in Kuwait with a strong identity featuring a bar-code graphic which was just as well given the time available.

Slipstream Podcast

I was recently asked to appear on one of Slipstream great series of podcasts with hosts Dusty Michael and Scott Elkins.

I talked about how I started from my days at Uni and McLaren and my transition from vehicle styling into livery design. Also a few tips and tricks of the trade. Finally I touch on how Formula Drift is really NASCAR for the 21st century 🙂

Its a long one, so grab a coffee. Links below.  Thanks for the opportunity Scott and Dusty, it was great fun.

Vehicle Livery Templates update.

With the rush of IMSA so called ‘off-season’ past us and wrapping up other projects, it is  a good opportunity to catch up on vehicle templates now available, ready for liveries!

These templates have been produced using OEM or team supplied art, are to scale and fully vector.

Creating any template takes hours, so having these assets built and to hand makes the design process more efficient and cost effective. Working with scale templates are vital for a smooth design and vinyl/paint application process. As a trained Vehicle Stylist, I understand how a 2D graphic works on 3D form perfectly. Once signed off, these are ready within hours for print and vinyl production, streamlining the livery process.

I also have a full suite of templates for team and fan clothing and race haulers.

A summer of recent templates:

GT3:
Aston Martin Vantage GT3
Audi R8 LMS GT3
Audi R8 (2015,6) GT3 (WIP)
BMW M6 GT3
BMW Z4 GT3
Dodge Viper GT3 (WIP)
Ferrari 458 GT3
Ferrari 488 GT3
Lamborghini Huracan GT3
McLaren 650S GT3
McLaren MP4-12C GT3
Mercedes AMG GT3 2015
Mercedes SLS AMG GT3
Porsche 991 GT3 Cup

MOMO Morgan three-wheeler

I was commissioned by Henrique Cisneros of MOMO Motorsport back in 2014 to create a roadcar livery for a special Morgan three wheeler. Unlike previous MOMO products, branding was to be minimal as it would be for show and road use and the base color would be a chrome blue.

news_momo_4

Morgan were most helpful with their design team supplying their logos and scale line drawings to ensure everything was accurate. As you can see the design from the outside was based upon a retro chrome strip graphic on the Blue chrome base, with some designs being integrated into the exhaust position.

Scion retrospective

Last week, Toyota announced ‘Scion’, its so called youth-centric brand, in North America would be absorbed into the Toyota line up beginning August 2016. It marks the end of a thirteen year journey for Scion, a brand I worked with during the Scion Tuner Challenge in 2014 and a number of Scion chassis over the year.
STC_design_16

The original concept for Scion was to appeal to the youth market and in the early days it did just that, bringing previously JDM only vehicles to the US marketplace including the xB ‘Toaster’ which was a decade before the Kia Soul and Nissan Cube.

However over time, aside from the FR-S, the Scion product range was watered down to nothing more than bland Toyota with Scion badges.

Corey Fergus to compete in PWC GT Cup class

2015 Pirelli World Challenge ‘TC’ Champion, Corey Fergus will move up to the GT Cup class of the Pirelli series with an updated livery on his new racecar, a Porsche 991 GT3 Cup Car. I designed the original AERO livery on his championship winning Porsche Cayman for the 2015 season from a joint commission by Corey and AERO paint films.

news_16_coreycayman

The livery has proved successful and recognizable in the crowded PWC grid in 2015, so the best approach was to update it to fit on the new 997.

Slightly different proportions and additional sponsor requirements resulted in an extensive rework on the side to ensure it was resolved on the longer wheelbase car. No cutting corners here.

2016 IMSA Rolex 24 Update

The start of the 2016 North American Season gets underway at Daytona International Speedway, this weekend with the Rolex 24 Hours and I have been involved in a variety of projects associated with the event.

16_roar_Turner_3

Most prominent are new liveries for Turner Motorsport with their all new BMW M6 GT3 and CJ Wilson Racing and their new Porsche Cayman GT4 ClubSport.

16_roar_Turner_2

The Turner design has been developed form the fan favorite Z4 livery, although the larger proportions of the M6 coupe proved challenging to balance. We ended up with a couple of final designs which the team could not decide on, so we went with both!

Each car runs a different diagonal stripe, along with the addition of driving light cover colors, help fans and the mechanics tell the two cars apart.

CJ Wilson Racing Livery Design feature on Jalopnik.com

Jalopnik.com’s Stef Schrader has just published a cool feature on the livery design process of the new #33 CJ Wilson Racing Porsche Cayman GT4 ClubSport which will compete in the 2016 Continental Tires SportsCar Challenge.

16_CJWR_final_concepts

I talk about why went for darker hues, the use of the CJ Wilson signature (aka ‘Star’) and how this has become a common feature on his racecars so no matter what the partner, it is always clear its a CJ Wilson Racing car and will make the entries look more like a collective regardless of sponsor or base color.
